There are situation in which you might want to change the address under which your website is working. Reasons can differ. For example you have been working under the temporary domain and now when you are finished you want to move to proper one.
Or maybe your website is growing and you don’t want to have some immature address anymore. Whatever reason, while using Wordpress you may do such a switch pretty easily.
First things first
Buy the new domain. Yes, I know this may sound pretty stupid but you will not believe how many times I have been talking to people who thought that they may just change the name of their website domain to whatever they please. So for goodness sake, buy and be the owner of domain you want to use.
When you have the domain, make sure to connect it of maybe better word would be to point it to the hosting plan or server you are using. Make sure it not only points to the proper IP address but also on the server itself to the directory your website is installed.
Note that I do not cover this part since it may vary depending of the hosting provider.
How Wordpress works?
When it comes to this specific CMS it’s pretty straight forward because it is know the address under which it is working based on two fields available in dashboard so let’s login and go to: Settings / General.
Now just change the values in these two fields:
to.. yes, you guest it, to your new domain name:
After saving the change you will be logged out of the Wordpress dashboard but the work is done. This is natural behaviour since you just tell the script that it no longer live under old address. Just login again and check if the dashboard is working fine. You should already see the new domain in your browser address bar.
Check the website itself
Although you done what should be done and everything went smoothly, please check the website. Most important elements are the links in menu and the content of random articles present at your website.
In some cases when you have put the elements like for example logotype using full url to image, it will not show. Same goes to other elements which you embedded with full old url. You can fix this just by editing the settings and articles. If you note that there is plenty of such problems you might want to use tool made by InterConnectIT. I will cover how to use it in other article.
In the mean time, gratulations! You just change the domain under which your Wordpress website is working. Easy right?
